Our laboratory combines microbiology, geochemical, genetic and molecular biology approaches to learn about the role of microbes in our environment. Because of their outstanding metabolic diversity, microbes can be found thriving virtually everywhere. Far from being dangerous, they stand as key players in shaping the chemistry (e.g., by altering the pH or creating new molecules), and geology (e.g., by catalyzing rock formation or dissolution) of the environment. It is critical to gain insight into how microbes respond to environmental changes now underway to ensure sustainable use of resources and development of the environment.

Currently, we are interested in gaining insight into how microbes affect the mobility and toxicity of metals and metalloids. We are currently working on mercury (Hg), a potent neurotoxin, and iron (Fe), a keystone metal in geochemical cycles also involved in all aspect of cellular functions. Our focus is on cold environments, in both temperate and polar areas and is based on both field and laboratory work.
