About

I strongly believe that the injustices we see in the world are in large part a product of epistemological choices—in scholarly research as well as in public life—that accept certain categories (e.g. identity) as given, reduce human lives to “variables,” and permit overly simplified analysis of political life, occluding the complex interactions that produce social phenomena.

My commitment in research, in teaching, and in my participation in public life, is to question these given categories and to advance understanding of social life in ways that respect the whole person. This commitment to critical perspectives derives directly from my previous experiences and is at the root of my motivation towards a career in teaching and ethnographic research.
