Thesis Title: To the Heart of the Continent: Canada and the Creation of the St. Lawrence Seaway, 1938-1959
About
My dissertation explores Canada's role in the creation of the St. Lawrence Seaway from the 1930s to the 1950s. My research looks at Canadian-American relations as they pertain to political, economic, and defence concerns, but I also examine environmental diplomacy: how environmental nationalism and conceptions of nature shaped the negotiations and they way the project was approached by the Canadian government. I delve into the process by which an "all Canadian" Seaway became a cooperative project and what this reveals about Can-Am relations in the Second World War and early Cold War period.
